Zisola - Mazzei

About us

Today as in the past, the Mazzei family leads the legacy of their know-how at the place where everything started, at Castello di Fonterutoli, one of the most important institutions of Chianti Classico and Tuscany, with an outstanding history and a bright future ahead.

Since more than six hundred years, the Mazzei family produces unique wines with spirit and passion renewed from generation to generation.
At Fonterutoli, as well as at Belguardo and Zisola, resides the same philosophy that aims to promote local vine varieties as an expression of the identity of the region, in respect of diversity and nature, via sustainable agriculture and improvements mindful of the delicate hydro-geologic balance, in order to prevent soil erosion and maximize water reserves in the region.
All of this in order to be able to hand the land intact to future generations.

Our farm

The Estate is located in South-East Sicily, the land of origin of the Nero d'Avola vine only a few steps from Noto, famous for its baroque buildings and Unesco World Heritage Site. The Mazzei identified the latent potential of this land rich with history, culture, and charm, and started an ambitious wine making project in 2003.

A property of 50 hectares, the area extends around the 3 buildings "bagli" of the estate, of which the main one enjoys a wonderful view over Noto and the surrounding "gardens" cultivated with vineyards, citrus trees, olives, and almonds. Here a small but efficient winery is provided with stainless steel vats with temperature control for wine making and about 350 oak barrels for fining the wines.
In addition to wine, production also includes Extra virgin Olive Oil produced from the Moresca, Ogliarola Messinese, and Nocellara Etnea cultivars, citrus fruit, and almonds.
