Sicilian Nerello Mascalese is identified, for good reason, with the Etna area.  But we can find interesting examples of the variety in other areas of Sicily, where unique climatic and soil compositions offer a different expression of Nerello Mascalese.
In addition the Farò DOC, in Messina, where Nerello Mascalese is blended with Nero d’Avola, Nocera, and Nerello Cappuccio, Nerello Mascalese finds a small cradle in western Sicily, between Palermo and Trapani. This is the case of Vurria Nerello Mascalese from the Di Giovanna winery.  The winery is managed by brothers Gunther and Klaus, and located in the mountains, on the slopes of Monte Genuardo, a natural reserve of Sambuca di Sicilia (Agrigento).  The family vineyards have been organically grown for over 20 years and the cultivation of Nerello is owed to their father Aurelio Di Giovanna, planted in 1968
The estate owned and managed Nerello vineyard “Paradiso” is located in Contessa Entellina; a completely different territory from Etna. The volcanic sands and rock give room to clay and tuff, elements that contribute to the creation of a different but equally important profile. In the wine, we don’t find that note of graphite, the leitmotif of all Nerello Mascalese from Etna, but a balsamic hint that leads into red fruits like cherry and currant, opening up to tertiary hints of white pepper and light toast.  The palate is quite fresh and the tannins are well balanced; given its light body, it’s a red that pairs well with steak like fish, such as tuna or cod.
